History of Relay For Life

Relay For Life History

Relay For Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington USA when Dr. Gordon Klatt walked around a track for 24 hours. He raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The following year Dr. Klatt formed a committee who recruited 19 teams to join him on the track in this overnight event. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life was born. Other communities formed their own Relay Committee and did the same. The rest is history!

Relay For Life works everywhere and now takes place in more than 20 countries around the world.  The video below is from an american based Relay For Life.
